Social/Emotional Resources

It is normal to experiences feelings of stress, worry, anger, and even confusion during and following major life changes.  When you are experiencing these changes, take care of your emotional health.  This will allow you to think clearly and react to your needs.  Self-care during an emergency will help your long-term healing. 

Here are some steps to help you through difficult times: 

  • Take care of your body– Eating healthy, exercising, and making sure you get plenty of sleep will help greatly.

  • Connect with others– It is important to have a strong support system. Maintain your relationships with those around you and find a close friend and trusted adult to talk to.

  • Take breaks– Take time for yourself. Make sure to spend time doing things that you enjoy.  Take deep breaths if you need them.

  • Stay informed– It is natural to feel like you are missing information. Make sure when you are going through a tough time to get information from a trusted source.  Be aware of things you see on social media - everything online is not always true. 

  • Seek help when needed– Find a trusted adult when you need help. Your school counselor, resource officer, a teacher, or administration are always available to help you through a tough time!  Reach out - we want to help!

LOOK OUT FOR THESE COMMON SIGNS OF DISTRESS: 

  • Feelings of numbness, disbelief, anxiety or fear. 

  • Changes in appetite, energy, and activity levels. 

  • Difficulty concentrating. 

  • Difficulty sleeping or nightmares and upsetting thoughts and images. 

  • Physical reactions, such as headaches, body pains, stomach problems, and skin rashes. 

  • Worsening of chronic health problems. 

  • Anger or short-temper. 

  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs. 

If you experience these feelings or behaviors for several days in a row and are unable to carry out normal responsibilities because of them, seek help.
