The PQRST Method
|
PREVIEW |
Preview the
material to get an idea of what you are about to
read. This prepares the mind and helps to clear it. Look through the
pages; read the subtitles; read the word in bold print; look at the
pictures; read the questions at the end of the chapter or section.
|
|
QUESTION |
After you preview the assignment, think
of some questions that will be answered as you read the assignment. Make
up questions using who, what, where, when, how, and why. These questions give you a
purpose and a reason to read.
|
|
READ |
Effective reading requires that you think
about what you read. In reading, you should be trying to answer the
questions you came up with when you previewed the assignment in Preview
and Question.
|
|
STATE |
State in your own words what you have
just read. If it is a difficult subject, you may want to do this after
every paragraph. This shows if you understood what you read. Recite out
loud or write a summary of what you have just read. Use margin word or
key words to help. Also recite and write the answers to the questions.
|
|
TEST |
To review, practice answering the
questions you made up and the ones at the end of the section and by
summarizing the chapter or sections. State summaries quickly by only
glancing at the key words in your margins or notes. You can also give
yourself tests similar to the teacher’s tests. You can make up your own
test or use the questions from the book or homework assignments; set a
time limit. |
If you use the PQRST
Method for all of your assignments, you will be on your way to better
grades. The more you use the method, the less time it will take.
