James W. Cooper Fellows 2008-2009
High School Essay Contest
Connecticut
Bar Foundation |
The 2008 - 2009 topic is “Techno Trouble”. The topic
hypothetical, (Attachment A), concerns the search of student Miranda
Gideon’s school owned laptop. Miranda used the laptop loaned to her by
PST to send an email to a few of her friends (fellow students). The
email described the Principal of PST in sexually offensive terms. Use of
such language violates school policy and, for that reason, the Principal
advised Miranda Gideon that she will be suspended for two weeks. Miranda
responded that she cannot be suspended because the Principal had no
right to read the email in the first place.
A contest entry must not exceed 1000 words, and as
stated below, must be in the form of a letter written to the School
Board by either Miranda Gideon or the Principal. The contest winner will
receive a $3,000 savings bond and the two runners-up will receive $1,500
savings bonds. The students, school contest coordinators and principals
will receive awards which will be presented at a ceremony presided over
by Connecticut Supreme Court Justices at the Connecticut Supreme Court.
