Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Windham High School with a Windham High School Diploma, students must meet 21 Credit Requirements and 4 Performance Requirements and Senior Project

I. Credit Requirements

English.................................................................................................. 4.00 credits

Math...................................................................................................... 3.00 credits

Science.................................................................................................. 2.00 credits

US History............................................................................................ 1.00 credit

Civics...................................................................................................... .50 credit

Social Science....................................................................................... 1.50 credits

Physical Ed........................................................................................... 1.00 credits

Health..................................................................................................... .50 credit

Fine or Practical Arts............................................................................ 2.00 credits

(These areas include courses in Art, Music, Business and Computer Science, Family and Consumer Science, and Technology Education, and World Languages. If 2.00 credits in the same World Language are chosen, then another 1.00 credit in the other areas must be taken.)

Electives................................................................................................ 5.50 credits

Total.................................................................................................... 21.00 credits

 

II. Performance Requirements

1. Demonstrate the ability to read a variety of materials with understanding and critical insight.

- Score in Band 3 or higher on the CAPT Reading Across the Disciplines assessment; or

- Achieve proficiency on a WHS performance-based reading assessment. 

2.    Demonstrate the ability to write clearly and coherently for a variety of purposes.

- Score in Band 3 or higher on the CAPT Writing Across the Disciplines assessment; or

- Achieve proficiency on a WHS performance-based writing assessment. 

3. Demonstrate the ability to use problem-solving skills to solve authentic problems.

- Score in Band 3 or higher on the CAPT Mathematics assessment; or

- Score in Band 3 or higher on  the CAPT Science  assessment; or

- Achieve proficiency on any WHS performance-based problem-solving assessment. 

4. Demonstrate well-developed local, state, and national awareness.

- Achieving a D or better in Civics class.

 

III. Senior Project

Seniors will have to complete a senior project in order to graduate. The projects will be explained in the students’ Senior Advisory Groups. Forms and timetables will be given to students by the Advisory Group teacher. The project is divided into three parts

1. Students are asked to complete at least 10 hours of volunteer service in an area of interest to them. The area of interest could be related to the student’s hobbies, talents, career interest, etc. The volunteer service should take place in the community or involve the community in some way.

 2. Students will write a two to three page reflection paper on their experience.

 3. Students will present their projects to their Advisory Group. This presentation should not be more than ten minutes long.
