Parent/Teacher conferences will be taking place at the end of March 2010. There will be three meeting time options for you to consider as you decide to schedule the conference with your child's teachers. All Parent/Teacher conferences need to be scheduled through the special Parent/Teacher Conference Hotline at 860-465-2471 which is active 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You may make your appointment by calling whenever it is convenient for you. Neither the Counseling Office nor the Main Office cannot schedule any Parent/Teacher conferences for you. The Parent/Teacher Conference Hotline at 860-465-2471 must be used. Your three meeting time options are:

Ms. Lamberson's Return Ms. Lamberson, Counselor for the class of 2011, returned from maternity leave on March 8, 2010. We would like to thank Mr. Rash, a retired WHS Counselor, for his help in her absence. Scholarships Seniors are advised to listen to the Morning Announcements for notices of scholarships. Please check the list regularly because it is constantly being updated and you don’t want to miss an application deadline. Career Academies The students in the class of 2013 will be selecting their WHS Career Academy for next year. Career Academies are smaller learning communities which combine students with similar career interests. Freshmen have been working in their Career Exploration classes to identify their interests and research careers. They will now choose one of three career academies for next year. The three academies are: the Business and Information Technology Academy, the Fine Arts and Human Services Academy, and the Science, Engineering, and Technology Academy. WHS is No Longer ACT Test Center Windham High School is no longer an ACT Test Center. Some test centers in the area are: Killingly High School and Norwich Free Academy for the October and April test dates; Woodstock Academy and East Hartford High School for all of the ACT test dates. CEEB School Code: 070930 PSAT Takers All students who took the PSAT in October will be eligible to use MyCollege QuickStart, a free personalized college and career planning kit. Information will be included with your score report which students will receive in December. This program will help with career and college planning.Upward Bound Applications In early February, representatives from the Upward Bound Program will be visiting English 9 classes to discuss the program. This program, which runs year-round, including summers, helps students obtain skills to earn a high school diploma as well as the skills needed for college acceptance and graduation and offers many cultural, social, and financial opportunities. It is for first generation college students. For more information call Ms. Caserta at 860-465-2469. Ms. Caserta will have applications after February 1st. Deadline for applications is February 14, 2010. Parent/Teacher Conferences WHS Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 24 and Thursday, March 25, 2010. Please watch school mailings for directions on signing up for appointments with your child’s teacher or counselor. College Fairs National College Fairs are scheduled for this area in the spring. On April 8 and 9, there is one at the Connecticut Expo Center. On March 7 and 8, it will be at Eastern States Exhibition in West Springfield, MA. On April 24, it will be at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI. College Fairs are a great way to meet with college representatives from all over the U.S., to get information, and to ask questions. Click Here for more information. QVMCHS Accepting Applications From The Class Of 2013 Quinebaug Valley Middle College High School is accepting applications from students who will be in grade 10 next year. This is a program for students who are seeking an alternative to their regular high school. Students are chosen from six towns. Participants complete their high school courses as well as taking college courses at QVCC. The program is located at the QVCC Danielson campus. More information may be obtained from Ms. Caserta or on the EASTCONN website. College Visits Seniors are encouraged to meet with the college representatives who visit Windham High School. Representatives have valuable information about their schools and its application process. The list is available in the Career Center.Career Center Visit the Career Center for job shadowing opportunities, interest inventories, resume writing, college/job applications, and more. Ms. Williams, Coordinator of the Career Center, is currently working with seniors on getting their letters of recommendation for applications and running workshops on writing college essays.Senior Deadlines Seniors are reminded to keep an eye on application deadlines and to allow the Counseling Office at least two weeks to process college and scholarship applications, transcript requests, letters of recommendation, etc. Do not wait until the last minute. Students who complete their college applications on-line must inform Ms. Zuckerman so that she will know to send transcripts.Scholarships A list of scholarships is available in the Counseling Office. Athletes and the NCAA If you are planning to play a sport in a Division I or Division II school, you must take certain high school courses to be eligible. Only college prep, academic classes count toward NCAA eligibility. Check the NCAA academic eligibility requirements online or with your counselor. Students should Click Here to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at the beginning of Junior Year. Early College Experience ECE (Early College Experience) is the program with the University of Connecticut in which students may earn UConn credit for courses taken at Windham High School. Students may take English 12 AP, World History I and World History III, Biology II AP, Chemistry II AP, and/or Individual and Family Development at WHS but apply to earn UConn credits. The applications are available in the Guidance Office from Ms. Lamberson, the ECE Coordinator. The ECE application deadline is June 30, 2009. Please see Ms. Lamberson for details. Educational Talent Search ETS is a federally funded program that helps guide first generation college and/or low income students to a college education. ETS supplies college visits, SAT Prep classes, financial aid workshops, SAT and college application fee waivers, plus other services. The most effective way to find out how your child is doing in class is to e-mail the teacher. Most e-mail addresses for teachers are the teacher’s first initial and last name @windham.k12.ct.us. For example: gblain@windham.k12.ct.us. Wanted: 18 Year Old Males Federal law requires that all males register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Registration is the way our government keeps a list of names of men from which to draw in case of a national emergency requiring rapid expansion of our Armed Forces. You may register by completing a form at any post office. You must also register to remain eligible for federal financial aid including federal student loans, federal job training, and federal jobs. Don't Become Technically Truant A student who forgets to bring in a note for an absence within five days of that absence receives an unexcused absence. A student with 4 unexcused absences in a month or 10 unexcused absences in a year is legally truant and may be referred to juvenile court for truancy. Notes for absences should be turned into the Main Office before 7:45 am.
