Working Papers

So you want to get a job? Have you been promised one by a local business but need "working papers" before you can start? Well you've come to the right place. What are working papers? Your "Working Papers" is actually a formal written statement of who you are, where you are living, and what your actual age is. The State of Connecticut Department of Labor requires any person or company who wants to offer a job to a minor to keep this statement on file.

According to State Labor Law, all 14, 15, 16, and 17-year olds seeking employment are required to obtain "Working Papers" from the city or town they live in before they can start working. The Superintendent of Schools has designated the Counseling Office at Windham High School to issue working papers to Windham High School students who live in the town of Windham. If you live in Columbia, you can obtain your Working Papers from Porter School.

All 14, 15, 16, and 17 year-olds live in the Windhams or Willimantic must appear at the Windham High School Counseling Department in person between the hours and 7:30 am and 3:30 pm and provide the secretary with Proof of Age and a Promise of Employment.

Proof of Age can be any of the following:

  • Original/Certified copy of birth certificate,
  • Baptismal Certificate showing date and place of birth,
  • A Hospital Certificate imprinted with Hospital’s name,
  • An attending physician’s certificate,
  • Driver’s license/permit, or
  • Passport.

Promise of Employment must contain all of the following:

  • Must be written on company letterhead,
  • Must state the specific job they will be doing,
  • Must include starting rate of pay at least $8.25 per hour,
  • Must include number of hours per week, and
  • Must be signed by an authorized representative of the company.
